From Mcleodganj, Kareri village is just thirteen kilometres away and the trekking journey takes around five to seven hours depending on the walking speed. The best part of the journey is not only the adventure but also the view that one would see around while walking uphill. The journey would start off with a wholesome breakfast early in the morning and small snacks and dry fruits would help one through the walk. Once the destination of beautiful Kareri village is reached, a supper would be enough to rest. A night’s rest in the village until next morning and then we would set out for our next destination.
Day 2: Trek from Kareri village to Kareri Lake
Distance: 14 km
Duration: 5-7 hrs
Altitude: 11,482 ft
Among the things to definitely see in Kareri, the Kareri Lake ranks on the top. The lake is situated on the high altitude and since the source of the blue and tranquil water is the snow melting from the glacier, the lake is shallow with very high visibility. We would rest for the night in Kareri. The lake is situated at quite an elevation and takes another five to seven hours from the village. The distance from the village to the lake is around fourteen kilometres. After reaching and experiencing the serenity along with the picturesque view, we would stay by the lake in tents for the night. The next morning, a nomadic breakfast would lead to starting off the journey to the next destination.
Day 3: Kareri Lake to Bagga
Distance: 10 km
Duration: 5-7 hrs
Altitude: 10,662 ft
The place called Bagga is known for its forest cover. From Kareri Lake to Bagga is a downhill trek. Reaching there would give a person a different experience altogether. The forest offers lush green sequences all around with chirping of birds and small trails all around. Tents are the best way of accommodation here and one can enjoy a campfire and have some dinner and retire for the night and be all to set for the next day.
Day 4: Bagga to Ghera and transportation to Mcleodganj
Distance: 16 km
Duration: 4-6 hrs
Feel the essence of being in nature as you wake up. A wholesome breakfast will set us off on our way to Ghera. This will be a downhill trek. As the journey starts and we move downhill, it is easy to observe the transition of nature. The vegetation, geographic and forest features change drastically, and this transition is stark – vegetation starts getting denser as we move down.
It is at Ghera that the campers have to take a bus or a taxi from. These transports would drop the travellers back to McLeodganj, from where this trek started. Plenty of memories made and time amongst friends cherished.
